API Security Trends: Energy & Utilities

Noname Security collaborated with Opinion Matters to conduct research on API Security Trends in 2023. In this survey, 631 senior cybersecurity professionals were surveyed to better understand the challenges and trends facing UK and USA businesses when it comes to their API security posture.

The challenge facing the energy sector is how to redesign the entire system while maintaining an affordable, resilient, secure supply that’s sustainable for the planet. However, where there’s disruption cybercriminals are quick to capitalize and, while the energy and utilities sector deals with its own crisis, cybercriminals are seizing the opportunity.

What did our energy and utilities respondents say?

• 78%  of respondents have experienced an API security incident in the last year — surprisingly this did not change from 2022 to 2023.
• Web application firewalls are the leading method of attack (37%) increasing from only 12% in 2022.
• 40%  know which APIs return sensitive data
• 21%  of respondents are testing in real-time (an increase from 7% last year).
